Shell Knob Students Honor Their Country

Shell Knob Students Honor Their Country
Posted on 01/24/2020

Shell Knob middle school students 6th-8th grade entered a competition in the fall held by our local VFW Post called the Patriot’s Pen. However, this is not just a local competition. This is a national essay writing competition. The VFW is dedicated to promoting future generations to love and learn about this great country. The top essays are sent by the local VFW Post to the district levels. If the essays are good enough they continue on. The hope is they will go to the national level.  The theme this year was “What Makes America Great”. The students plan, organize, write and edit their essays with no help beyond basic editing, so that their writing will be an original work by them. The president of our Local VFW Post Dave Atkinson with Dennis Page awarded the 1st-3rd place winners on January 24th. Third place was 8thgrader Kayli Rawlings, 2nd Place was 7th grader Marissa Cates, and 1st place was 7thgrader Makilah Koory. Students were awarded a certificate, medal, and money.
