Honor Band

Friday, January 5, 10 students from SKS went to Joplin High School to audition with approximately 400+ 7th and 8th students from around the Southwest district for the District Junior High Honor Band. There are 27 area schools represented at the Honor band tryouts. Students had prepared two pieces and four to six scales for the blind auditions. Students were scored on each of these items to earn a seat in the 7th grade Honor band and the 8th grade Honor Band. We are very proud of all those who auditioned. Two SKS students earned seats in the Honor Band. Ethan Dias was selected as 2nd chair Baritone in the 7th grade band and Rachel Steinmann was selected as 15th chair Clarinet in the 8th grade band. Each band consisted of approximately 70 students each.

Once selected, Ethan and Rachel received a folder with the music for each band respectively to prepare for rehearsal on Saturday January 13. On that Saturday students traveled with their director to Webb City High School where they spent their day from 9-4 in rehearsals with a break for lunch. At 4:00 pm  students dressed for their concert which began at 5:00 pm. The concert program began with a performance by the All District High School Jazz Band under the direction of Mr. Rob Babel. Following the Jazz Band the District 7th grade Honor Band under the direction of Mr. Patrick Stewart performed four pieces. Closing out the concert was the District 8th grade Honor Band under the direction of Mrs. Linda Huck.

From the audition process to the concert this is a great educational experience for our students. Congratulations to all who auditioned and to Ethan and Rachel for earning a seat in the Honor Band! Way to go Chargers!
