SKS Middle School and the Community

Students 6th-8th grade have been learning about our Founding Father, George Washington in our of President’s Day. Students used the quote from Henry Lee’s eulogy for George Washington, George Washington is our “…first in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen….”

The students wrote narrative proems that focused on different aspects of the quote. 6th grade focused on George Washington being the 1st in the hearts of his countrymen. While, 7th grade focused on the first president being the 1st at war. Last but not least, 8th grade focused on the peaceful aspects of Washington’s presidency.

Students were to use the information they researched in narrative poetic form which is: 3 to 4 lines per stanzas, 6 to 8 stanzas, and has meter. (Which means it has a beat) Students were judged on their informational content, organization, the beat in their poem, and their creativity.

Twelve student leaders went to Shell Knob’s Masonic Lodge on February 22, 2019 to share their information about George Washington at the yearly Washington celebration the Lodge holds. Students got to meet and greet lodge members and the community, eat dinner, and have cherry pie. Then they read their poems.

Each class had a 1stplace, 2nd place, and 3rd place winner. Then there was an overall winner. The 1st place winners and overall winner read their poems to the guests. The 1st place winners received a ten dollar gift card. The overall winner is receiving a trip to Mount Vernon, Virginia for himself and his family.

6th grade winners were Nathan Hunsucker 1st place, Lily Anderson 2ndplace, and Zaira Systo 3rd place.

7th grade winners were Noah Sawyer 1st place, Dre’ Jines 2nd place, and Madelyn Holtmann 3rd place.

8th grade winners were Rileigh Rickard 1st place, Isaac Hadlow 2nd place, and Logan Whisman 3rd place. The overall winner was Phillip Mason.

A big shout out goes to the Shell Knob Masonic Lodge for their support of our students.
