Schools across the nation are fighting the battle of chronic student absence.  Unfortunately, Shell Knob is right in this battle. Much research has been done on the negative effects of missing school. Beginning in Kindergarten, even missing two days a week puts students significantly behind in first grade. Research also shows that missing school has a negative impact on students grades, performance on assessments and poor attendance is also a predictor of high school dropout. Dropping out of high school results in poor job prospects, poor health and unfortunately, an increase in the involvement with the criminal justice system. (whitehouse.gov, 2023)  Missing school means missing lessons and then making up work.  It is definitely a lose-lose situation for the student and the teacher. In short, missing school has many adverse outcomes.

One way Shell Knob is encouraging students to be at school is by offering a field trip incentive. If students are present for 95% of each quarter, then they will get to go on a field trip. The first quarter field trip was to the YMCA in Monett and the trip for second quarter was to the Strike Zone in Aurora. Students get to enjoy all of the activities that the facilities offer and they are treated to lunch. Students that do not miss a single day of the year will receive a cash award on the last day of school.

There will be times that missed days just can't be avoided. Students definitely need to stay home when they are sick or may have an important appointment. However, making school attendance a priority is the first positive step for families to take. Students who do not miss school have stronger problem solving skills, better social skills, higher graduation rates and better employment. Getting an extra field trip once a quarter doesn't hurt either!
