Shell Knob Students are blessed to have community mentors making a positive difference in their lives. According to Webster's Dictionary, a mentor is "an experienced and trusted advisor." Our students know that our mentors are much more. These mentors are former educators, retirees, current working professionals, grandparents, parents, nurses, contractors, pastors, anyone who has a heart to encourage a kid. Most importantly, they are a trusted friend.
This amazing program was started in the 90's through a grant written by former Shell Knob teacher, Laurie Henderson. Mrs. Henderson reflected, "Our thought was that students would benefit both academically and on a personal level through pairing with the community members. Many of the relationships that were fostered grew from early grades through the eighth grade and some into high school and beyond. Students flourished from having a special adult cheering them on, and volunteers were blessed in many ways through the opportunity as well." Volunteers from the community come in each week and enjoy conversation and lunch with our students. They share their wisdom about their own life experiences and even help our students with homework. At the end of the school year, Shell Knob School hosts a mentor party where the mentors are presented with a card and a gift from their mentee. This year, the mentors received a nice umbrella.
Studies have shown that the mental health benefits of mentoring are numerous, both for the mentor and the mentee. Both parties walk away with meaningful relationships, encouragement, emotional support, self confidence, personal growth, and reduced stress. The program continues to be a success under the supervision of School Counselor, Keri Givens. If you would like to be a mentor to one of our students, watch for the information in August as school starts for the new year.
